Kaiser Permanente, the largest managed healthcare organization in the United States, is advising members to limit exposure to genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In its Northwest Fall 2012 newsletter, Kaiser warns of the potential danger GMOs pose to the national food supply. According to the newsletter:GMOs have been added to our food supply since 1994, but most people don’t know it because the United States does not require labeling of GMOs. As of 2012, most corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, and sugar beets are genetically modified. Nearly 80 percent of processed food and most fast food contain GMOs.Despite what the biotech industry might say, there is little research on the long-term effects of GMOs on human health. Independent research has found several varieties of GMO corn caused organ damage in rats. Other studies have found that GMOs may lead to an inability in animals to reproduce.Kaiser Permanente goes on to suggest several things members can do to help limit their exposure to GMOs. Advantages of organic food range from health benefits to environmentally safe solutions.  Organic’ refers to the way the food was grown and processed. Organic farming maintains and replenishes fertility of the soil so it’s not depleted and.or over-farmed. This helps to maintain the nutritional integrity of the food grow in that soil. A point not highlighted enough in the GMO verses Organic debate Pesticides and toxic fertilizers are not used for organic farming. There is the saying, “You are what you eat”. Many people wonder, why eat poisons and toxins if you don’t have to? Even the smaller advantages of eating organic food turn into significant health benefits over time.


More Bang for your Buck!
A recent $25 million study sponsored by the European Union, confirms the benefits or eating organic food and that it is more nutritious than non-organic food. The study found that organic fruits and vegetables have up to 50% more antioxidants, and more vitamins and minerals, such as iron and zinc. Antioxidants are known to attack free radicals in our bodies that can lead to cancer and other diseases. They also help combat heart disease. Other studies have shown that by eating organic foods, people have a stronger immune system, less weight problems, and better sleep.

Good Soil Produces Good Food. Bad Soil Produces Bad Food. Good Soil Cannot Produce Bad Food and Bad Soil Cannot Produce Good Food. It’s Simply Is Not Possible.

What’s Left Over?
Pesticide residue has been found in not only produce, but also breads, baby food and even human breast milk. So we have residue from the pesticide and we’re also being exposed to GMOs at the same time. Tell me again how this is better for me and my family?

Who is Environmentally Friendly?
Organic farms are gentler on the environment while massive, the GMO commercial farms erode the soil, harm or displace wildlife, and deplete nutrients from the ground. Huge industrial farms have been known for their cruelty to animals. Having an organic vegetable garden is a rewarding, earth-friendly process that benefits all life on the planet and provides healthy, delicious and nutritious food for us all.
